Tutor ND: Helping South Bend’s Students Thrive

Supporting Children Through Literacy and Mentorship

Our community is facing a growing challenge in literacy. A new state law now requires all third graders to pass a standardized reading test to advance to the next grade. Last year, 38% of South Bend’s third graders did not pass this exam, highlighting the need for additional support to help these students succeed.

Tutor ND offers an opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of local children. By providing focused tutoring and mentorship, volunteers can help students improve their literacy skills and build confidence in the classroom.

About Tutor ND

Tutor ND is a proven initiative designed to help children achieve academic success. Research shows that students who participate in this program are three times more likely to pass the iREAD exam, a critical milestone for young learners.

The program connects community members with students in grades 1-3 who need one-on-one support, offering tools and training to ensure every tutor can make a meaningful impact.

How You Can Help

We’re looking for 100 community members to join Tutor ND and support South Bend students over the next six months. Here’s what’s involved:

• Training and Compensation: You’ll receive all necessary training and guidance, as well as pay of $15–$25 per hour, depending on your experience and education level.
• Flexible Commitment: Tutors are asked to dedicate at least two hours per week, scheduled in 2-3 shifts based on availability.
• Personalized Support: Each tutor is paired with a student to provide focused help with literacy skills. A trained coach will support you throughout the process.
• No Experience Needed: Whether you’re an educator or just someone passionate about helping children, you’ll be equipped to make a difference.
